Mala-N
Mala – N or Combined Oral Contraceptives (COCs) use two hormones (estrogen and progestin) to prevent pregnancy from taking place by stopping ovulation (release of an egg from the ovary). It makes the mucous of the cervix thick making it hard for sperm to get into the uterus. It prevents pregnancy by changing the lining of the uterus making it unlikely for the fertilized egg to be implanted. A pack of oral contraceptive pill contains 28 pills (21 hormonal and 7 non-hormonal (iron). A pill is to be taken everyday, the reminder for which is also marked on the COC pack.

The birth control pill also helps in multiple other ways:

Regular use of Mala-N makes periods regular, lighter and less painful.
It may also help with premenstrual and menopausal symptoms.
It reduces the risk of cancer of the ovary and uterus. It also reduces fibroids, ovarian cysts and non-cancerous breast diseases.

Misconceptions

Mala-N increases the chances of birth defects

Mala-N or Combined Oral Contraceptives do not cause birth defects. It also does not harm the fetus if a woman becomes pregnant while taking the pills or accidentally consumes them while she is pregnant.
Mala-N may cause cancer

Mala – N does not cause cancer. The use of Mala – N is proven to decrease the risk of two gynecological cancers (ovarian and uterine) and also protects against benign breast disease like fibroids and cyst of breast.
Mala-N may lead to changes in weight

Over a period of time, a woman’s weight might fluctuate due to varied age related factors or life circumstances and should not be attributed only to the use of Combined Oral Contraceptives. However, any noticeable change in weight that takes place due to the use of COCs will reverse once the client stops taking the pills.
Mala-N decreases sexual desire and affects sexual pleasure

There is no evidence that COCs affect a woman’s sex drive. Although some women using the pill have reported either an increase or decrease in sexual interest and performance, it is difficult to say whether such changes are a result of Combined Oral Contraceptives or other life events.
